A sweet, if predictable romantic comedy, with Richard Dreyfuss and Susan Sarandon, two of the more underrated Hollywood talents around, making the most of the few wryly funny lines that come their way, as a security officer and unwed mum destined to fall in love from the first few minutes of the film. Even so, acting honours are stolen by veteran Jean Stapleton and newcomer Wil Wheaton, perfect respectively as Sarandon's domineering mother and precocious young son. The performances are so winning, in fact, that the chances are you'll forgive the film its slight overlength and clumsy ending. Dreyfuss's sideline inventions are quite amusing, especially the talk-back weighing machine that offers such advice as 'You've gained seven pounds. If you want to put something in your mouth, try a gun.'
