A modern-day version of Marty, but with a dangerous edge. A romance that could at any moment tip over into tragedy, it stars a bearded Robert De Niro as a Vietnam veteran who decides to take his wartime buddy (Ed Harris) on a fishing trip. An unlikely affair springs up between De Niro and Harris's schoolteacher sister (Kathy Baker) but is threatened by Harris, whose visions of Vietnam still torment him, driving him to sullen alcoholism and increasing bursts of fury. De Niro, who has his own horrific memories, finds himself fighting for all three of their futures. Like its Vietnam scenes, Stephen Metcalfe's screenplay does shy away from biting too deep for comfort. But committed, realistic portrayals from the stars give it a warmth it doesn't always deserve. Just like Betsy Blair in Marty, Baker is much too attractive for the wallflower role, though she does give dowdiness a good try.
