A boring film with human dynamo Patrick Dempsey would seem a contradiction in terms, but here it is. A downright peculiar Gothic comedy romance, it exists principally for one more virtuoso performance by veteran European star Lila Kedrova, as the grandmother whose dying spirit dominates a weird family whose three daughters all enjoy an on/off romantic entanglement with Dempsey when he comes to stay with the youngest (Jennifer Connelly) for Christmas. There's a lot of wandering around the richly brocaded trappings of the house, which gives the cameraman opportunities to photograph everything in varying shades of brown. As things develop (or fail to), you may soon feel like donning Dempsey's nightshirt and nightcap and joining this latter-day Eddie Bracken in slumber.
