Paul Newman, still lacking none of the dynamism that made him a star, returns to something like his best form as an innocent man whose life is virtually wrecked because hotheads at the DA's office believe he may be someone who has contacts that could help crack a months-old investigation into the disappearance of a top union leader. So the news of his possible complicity is leaked to a hard-headed newsgirl (Sally Field) who duly splashes it all over the front page. Subsequent developments lead almost inevitably to tragedy before Newman decides to get his own back. Although the ways and means of this are not presented in quite the hard-hitting manner they might be, it's nice to see the bad guys get their come-uppance at the end. Newman was Oscar-nominated for this, but the eye is also caught by Bob Balaban's coldly sneaky investigator, and by Josef Sommer's professional but understanding editor. Smooth and thought-provoking entertainment.
