John Sayles' understated story of a lesbian wife who comes out of the closet to carve a new life for herself. Although Sayles' own script is unable to resist undercutting reality for the sake of a smart line, the performances of the chief female protagonists, Linda Griffiths and Jane Hallaren, remain highly watchable throughout.
