Director Lindsay Anderson's bitter, black and bloody satire on hospitals, unions, snobbery, spare-part surgery and society itself: indeed, anything within its reach. Anger drips from its jaws like the blood from the stitches of the composite creature mad surgeon Graham Crowden hopes to unveil to visiting royalty. Malcolm McDowell again returns to the role of Mick Travis (previously seen in Anderson's If... and O Lucky Man! ), now an investigative reporter seeking to unmask the 'Frankenstein' surgeon. Leonard Rossiter is the senior hospital administrator who will stop at nothing (even murder) to see that the royal visit goes ahead. Meanwhile, demonstrators gather outside the hospital gates, and the whole unstable brew explodes in a final reel that ultimately lapses into pretentiousness.
