Typically overheated Tennessee Williams melodrama, although with rather more humour than one usually associates with that playwright, co-directed with a full head of steam by John Huston on location in the remote Mexican fishing village of Mismaloya. Richard Burton enjoys himself as a defrocked priest now reduced to working as a courier to a party of American teachers and finding himself locked into a sexual square dance with Sue Lyon (in her first role since her debut as a pouting nymphet in Lolita), Ava Gardner as a widow running the remote seaside hotel where he and his party end up, and Deborah Kerr, superb as a spinster with hidden depths. The performances match the ripeness of the writing and the locations add to the impact of an always watchable - if rarely credible - star movie.
