Brando died of lung failure at a Los Angeles hospital, aged 80.
Friends and family of the star have been reluctant to elaborate any further on the cause of death, citing their respect of Brando's long-time desire for privacy.
His lawyer, David J Seeley, said funeral arrangements would be private.
He added that the overweight and reclusive actor "was a very private man".
The legendary Hollywood star, who won Oscars for his roles in The Godfather and On The Waterfront, passed away in a Los Angeles hospital on 2 July.
Brando was struck down with pneumonia in 2002, and was seen being pushed in a wheelchair and breathing with the help of an oxygen mask earlier this year.
He was said to live in a shabby bungalow in west Los Angeles.
Despite being a double Oscar winner, Brando was understood to have been $20m (£10.9m) in debt and living on social security benefits, a small pension and acting residuals.
His fear of debt collectors had allegedly prompted him to hide his precious Oscars.
A turbulent personal life saw him marry three times and father 11 children.
His son Christian was jailed for manslaughter after shooting dead pregnant sister Cheyenne's lover in 1988, after he claimed he was abusing his sibling.
Cheyenne, an addict, committed suicide several years later, leaving behind a son.
In later years, Brando's acting work consisted of a number of cameos, including the Superman movie.
He was recently reported to be set for a return to work to voice a character in an animated movie called Big Bug Man.
Even President George W. Bush got in on the tributes. in a statement, Bush said: "With the passing of Marlon Brando, America has lost a great actor of the stage and screen.
"His award-winning performances in films such as On the Waterfront and The Godfather demonstrated his outstanding talent and entertained millions across the country.
"Marlon Brando was one of the 20th century's finest actors and will be missed by his many fans and admirers."
