The movie, which told the story of a mysterious businessman resident in a Swiss hotel, won five Italian Oscars, including best film and best director.
Sorrentino's first effort - the 1994 short Un Paradiso - was a finalist at the Palermo Film Festival.
As a writer, he worked with Antonio Capuano on Polvere Di Napoli and went on to direct the short L'Amore Non Ha Confini.
His big screen debut, the 2001 comedy drama One Man Up, was in competition at the Venice Film Festival and won the jury award at the Buenos Aires Film Festival.
