Despite a small (but devoted) following in this country, drag racing is a peculiarily American sport. This film, therefore, which is a biopic of the first woman drag racing champion Shirley Muldowney, may not at first glance appeal. Nevertherless it's a good solid drama and the racing sequences are loud and exciting, once you've figured out what's going on. Miss Muldowney's private life didn't run on the smooth tarmac her racing career did, so there's plenty of off-track drama, too. Bonnie Bedilia fills the starring role so well it's surprising it did'nt give her career the boost it deserves. Beau Bridges is also effective as the man she turns to after her divorce. Lovers of all things yankee, will enjoy this as it's a thoroughly American film with a thoroughly American subject. Pedal to the metal, good buddy.
