Almodóvar's movies, with their campness, kitsch and low-life milieu, resemble early John Waters' films, such as Pink Flamingos and Polyester. Both Almodóvar and Waters are fascinated by the chasm dividing fantasy from reality; the way everyday clichés translate into really crazy situations, and continue to be used within them. Almodóvar relishes the props of fantasy: the letters, the phone calls, the looks and the rumours surrounding love affairs. Photographically, too, The Law of Desire takes on the appearance of an energetic soap opera, emphasising the game Almodóvar is playing. A hilarious delight.
