A major hit at the Cannes Film Festival and on the arthouse circuit, this black comedy boasts the same oddball collection of off-the-wall characters and situations as in director Jim Jarmusch's first film, Stranger Than Paradise. Three jail cell mates decide to break out `just like they do in the American movies' and it's here that the fun really starts. Star Tom Waits also supplies songs for the soundtrack, but the acting honours are stolen from him by Italian comic actor Roberto Benigni, later unwisely to follow in Peter Sellers' footsteps as The Son of the Pink Panther. Distinctly odd, but a real find if your sense of humour happens to match.
