Five cities, five stories, five dreary taxi journeys. Jim Jarmusch's pointless cab drive around the world does catch some of the bleaker qualities of the cities visited, and is briefly enlivened by Roberto Benigni's Roman scandals when he confesses (to his priestly passenger) his sexual encounters with pumpkins, sheep and his brother-in-law's wife. Béatrice Dalle is quite effective as a French blind girl, and Winona Ryder and Gena Rowlands act hard in one of the two American sections. At more than two hours, though, this ride has so little to say that's entertaining that it's hardly worth the fare. Probably a cult movie in the making.
