Despite the fact that Damon Runyon's story about a little girl left with a bookie as 'security' was definitively annexed by Shirley Temple in 1934, producers have felt compelled to have several more tries at it since. Neither Mary Jane Saunders (in Bob Hope's Sorrowful Jones, 1949) nor Claire Wilcox (in Tony Curtis' 40 Pounds of Trouble, 1962) laid a glove on the original and, in this most recent version, it's Sara Stimson struggling to make an impression as `The Kid'. Walter Matthau makes a dour Sorrowful and, strangely, it's Tony Curtis who this time round takes the role of the villain.
