Joe Mantegna slips into his role as a New York private eye like he's putting on an old shoe in this edgy if over-familiar made-for-TV thriller. Soon he follows all the cliched conventions of this kind of story as he becomes romantically involved with a sexy but shifty client (Kelly Maroney), who's then found at the scene of the crime when his ex-partner's killed. This slow-burning story takes at least half its length to get into its stride, but if you can stay that long it's excellent all the way to the finish. Like James Woods, Mantegna makes everything he appears in seem at least two notches better than it actually is, and detective story fans will be thrilled. So, too, will be Adam Ant's fans, with their hero as a creepy art gallery owner.
