This film is funny for about five minutes - the time taken up by Bill Murray's opening routine. Then an elephant comes into it. Unfortunately, the elephant proves to be the whole film. Left to Murray by his circus clown father, it's now joining him on a trek to California. A really talented cast (Pat Hingle's also in it) tries hard to make what it can of this situation. But the task is hopeless, especially given Howard Franklin's stodgy direction and the laborious pace. Tai is probably charming if you like elephants, but pretty charmless to the rest of us; Murray shouts a lot; Matthew McConaughey may look back on this as his worst-ever film performance; Janeane Garofalo and Linda Fiorentino barely have roles. The colour is as mucky as an elephant's poop. Not good.
