Independent American film-makers John Hanson and Rob Nilsson are well into Grapes of Wrath territory with this poignant portrait of immigrant farmers fighting for survival. But here the scene is not the dust-bowls of Oklahoma, but the grain-rich plains of North Dakota. Black-and white photography heightens the film's documentary feel.
