A feast of brilliantly-recreated Twenties' and Thirties' songs is the main attraction of this mammoth musical biopic about Gertrude Lawrence, with Julie Andrews in the title role. On stage the film's a hit; off-stage it never quite catches fire, in spite of Daniel Massey's delightful impersonation of Noël Coward, which was rightly rewarded with an Academy Award nomination. The film, though, was a massive box-office flop, and the first serious reverse of Andrews' screen career.
