Homeless to Harvard: The Liz Murray Story

Although ultimately inspiring, this fact-based TV movie about a teenage girl who manages to escape poverty and win a place at Harvard is a depressing journey. Thora Birch plays Liz Murray, whose mother (Kelly Lynch) is a drug-addicted alcoholic dying of AIDS. Birch and Lynch both give fine, committed performances in this well written if cliched and disposable drama.
