Brutal and compelling reconstruction of the infamous Attica State Prison uprising of 1971, in which a riot gave way to a stalemate ended by the slaughter of many inmates in just a few minutes of gunfire. It was an event taken up by John Lennon in song and, incongruously, by Al Pacino's anti-hero as a chant in Dog Day Afternoon. Based on the book A Time To Die by New York Times journalist Tom Wicker, played here by George Grizzard. Plenty of photogenic ugly mugs in the cast, none better deployed than that of portly character actor Charles Durning.
