Graham Greene's novels have often made absorbing entertainment and this is no exception, despite some improbabilities in the plot development, particularly towards the end. Richard Gere, with a faintly odd English accent that baulks at 'a's, plays the young doctor working around the Argentine-Paraguay border who allows himself to become involved in two equally dangerous games: aiding revolutionaries (who he thinks may help him find his missing father) and having a passionate affair with the glamorous young wife of the boozy British consul. Gere's battles with his accent permit those wily old birds Michael Caine (as the consul) and Bob Hoskins (as the Argentine chief of Police) to sneak off with the acting honours. In its best moments, this is tough, sexy and flavourful.
