A charming, heartwarming film for children with a surefire formula: dissimilar people work together for a common but righteous cause. Jack Klugman is earthily endearing as the zoo owner of the title, Morgan Freeman makes his screen debut as Afro and the kids, Reuben Figueroa, David Mann and Devin Riou, are charming and natural throughout. Only minus: one of the earliest appearances of the dreaded hand-held camera technique.
