An ambitious and gimmicky exploration of the relationship between the Rev Charles L Dodgson (aka author Lewis Carroll) and the little girl who inspired him to write Alice's Adventures in Wonderland. The film, directed by former BBC TV presenter Gavin Millar, sets out with the idea that Dodgson was unnaturally attracted to underage girls. But the presentation is clumsy, involving several long, lustful gazes between Ian Holm as Dodgson and then-newcomer Amelia Shankley as Alice. An amusing diversion is created by grotesque caricatures of characters from the Wonderland story, produced by Jim Henson's Creature Shop and voiced by Alan Bennett, Julie Walters and Fulton Mackay.
