The Oxford graduate first attracted attention with the supernatural thriller Stigmata starring Gabriel Byrne and Patricia Arquette.
While studying at Oxford University, he put himself through college by acting in the British movies Another Country and Dreamchild.
After moving to America to study film at University College Los Angeles, he made his debut with the musical short Please Hammer, Don't Hurt Them in 1990.
The following year he made his feature debut with the TV crime-drama Dillinger, about the celebrated American bank robber.
Wainwright made his big screen debut with the Disney family comedy Blank Check in 1994 and went on to make the art house romantic comedy The Sadness of Sex.
After Stigmata, he worked with rappers Niggers With Attitude for the video Straight Outta Compton and the TV horror yarn Wolf Lake.
Recent work includes the remake of John Carpenter's 1979 horror-thriller The Fog with Selma Blair.
