This biography of Fifties country and western singer Patsy Cline led to yet another Oscar nomination for Jessica Lange, following her earlier one for Frances, which told the story of doomed Hollywood star Frances Farmer. Both earned high critical praise but caught a cold at the box office. Director Karel Reisz steers the film more towards romance than A Star is Born clichés and scores high marks for recreating the period to perfection. Lange and Ed Harris, as Patsy's ne'er-do-well husband, who turns to drink because of his macho insecurities, are excellent, but the rest of the cast - including an early appearance by John Goodman - is reduced to bit parts. Lange's lip-synching of the real Patsy on the film's soundtrack is also an ace up the film's sleeve.
