Edmund Gwenn, as a Scottish doctor, manages to outshine even his co-star, Lassie, in one of the best scripts from the famous doggy series. Here, our beloved canine heroine is saddled with a psychological fear of water. How this is eventually overcome will leave few eyes dry. Gwenn and Donald Crisp exude cosy crustiness, while Janet Leigh, in her early contract days with MGM, is as pretty a heroine as you could wish for. There's also wonderful Technicolor photography of the rolling Scottish (actually Californian) countryside by Charles Schoenbaum.
