William Holden made his TV debut in this gripping, gritty police drama, edited down from a four hour mini-series, based on the best-selling novel by ex-cop turned writer Joseph Wambaugh, whose later works were the inspiration behind 'The Onion Field', 'The Black Marble' and 'The Choirboys'. Holden won critical acclaim and a Best Actor Emmy Award (TV Oscar) for his performance as a 20-year veteran of the Los Angeles Police Department on his last few days before retirement and hot on the trail of the killer of a prostitute. Lee Remick was also nominated for her understated performance as Holden's ever-patient girlfriend. This superior drama was so successful that George Kennedy played the main character in a subsequent TV series.
