A spirited spoof Western with some inspired patches of dialogue by the distinguished western writer James Lee Barrett. Director Andrew V McLaglen sets a rousing pace, Dean Martin's lazy charm makes him a disarming rogue, and there's even room for two British actresses, Honor Blackman and Carol White, in this uncomplicated and underrated slice of the Wild West. Character actors from the world of McLaglen's mentor, John Ford, abound in the supporting cast, and Barrett gives them some richly comic lines to deliver. We particularly liked the character who, asked if he intends to bury a recently-deceased comrade, replies: 'Naw: perhaps somethin'll come down out of the hills tonight and drag him off'.
