A monster-size TV movie much praised in America, although a shortened version had a mixed reception when shown in cinemas elsewhere in the world. Anyone expecting a warts and all picture of 'The King's early life' should be reminded that this had a 'U' certificate in British cinemas and the tone, even with the formidable John Carpenter in the director's chair, is pretty reverential. Nonetheless, the film was immensely popular on American TV, and Kurt Russell (whose songs were dubbed by Ronnie McDowell) was effective enough as Elvis to be nominated for an Emmy. The star's own father, character actor Bing Russell, plays his father in the film, and you'll spot emerging leading men Ed Begley Jr and Joe Mantegna in supporting roles.
