Comedy specialist Lionel Jeffries has a stab at being a villain in this British-made swashbuckler, set in 1648 England, but the cloak of treachery sits ill-at-ease on his shoulders. A relatively slimline Oliver Reed does better as Jeffries's aide, but not even the misty beauty of Jack Asher's photography can disguise the fact that is the sort of film that Hollywood was churning out by the dozen a decade beforehand. Incidentally, don't ask us why this was re-titled The Crimson Blade for release in America but it was.
