Rod Steiger is brilliantly cast and several times larger-than-life in this tongue-in-cheek melodrama. He plays a meat-packing tycoon who believes himself to have been ordered by God to track down murderers, imprison them in his homemade cells... and execute them on his very own electric chair! (The throne-like chair is fitted with angels' wings to give it "more of an ethereal quality"). Steiger is excellent and well-complemented by Lauren Hutton as the mocking wife of a congressman he invites to a 'fry-up'. Heather Graham of 'Twin Peaks 'gives a pert performance as an inquiring probation officer. This was director Sam Irvin's debut; a former associate of Brian De Palma, he has managed to reflect some of De Palma's strongest styles - the sweeping camera movements and cartoon-like exaggerations.
