This TV film covers fairly familiar ground: what would happen if someone accidentally pushed the Big Red Nuclear Button? But it's well acted and exciting. Yet another variation on the 'Fail Safe' theme of the Russians and Americans hurling nuclear weapons at each other, it sometimes plays like 'Dr Strangelove' without the laughs. Leads Powers Boothe and Rebecca DeMornay are pretty superfluous to the main drama as (can you believe this?) pilots on the same nuclear bomber plane who happen to have an affair, and it's left to Martin Landau (as the US president), James Earl Jones, Darren McGavin and Nicolas Coster to provide the authority. Peter MacNicol, whose career has rather stagnated since his leading roles in 'Sophie's Choice' and 'Dragonslayer', is very good as a presidential military aide.
