Michael Moriarty gives a typically dogged performance as an undercover cop who accidentally kills another officer - a girl - and becomes enmeshed in a department-wide cover-up, in this tough melodrama which marked Richard Gere's entry into films. Tautly written by Abby Mann, author of Judgment at Nuremberg and Ernest French Connection Tidyman, and with a cast including such tough-guy experts as Yaphet Kotto, Hector Elizondo and William Devane, the film is, however, rather let down by the gloomy Moriarty, whose delivery would make Gary Cooper seem animated by comparison.
