Who would want to make a movie - especially about American football - that had nothing new to offer? Well, not quite. This one does have a girl goal kicker, although she barely gets a look in. Otherwise, this num(b)skull comedy soon wastes whatever potential it had. The comic elements - especially the dean who hates football and will do anything to scupper the team - are pitifully over the top. The serious elements come close to making you laugh, especially the romance between 34-year-old Scott Bakula (brought back to the college education he never had, to make winning passes) and journalism teacher Harley Jane Kozak. Commiserations to them both: even Tom Cruise and Michelle Pfeiffer couldn't have done anything with these characters. 'Take 'em out,' says the coach to Bakula at the (anti) climactic game. 'It's your team, son.' Such dialogue might have worked 50 years ago. We only said might.
