Only a contrived ending mars Jack Webb's forceful drama of gangsters and musicians in the Jazz Age of the 20s. The jazz is brassy and basic, and the story has a cutting edge of realism that gives it a gritty feel. There's good support from Andy Devine and Lee Marvin (cast for once as the hero's wisecracking friend) and a solid story, plus a few unconventional directorial tricks from Webb, who also has the sense to surround himself with such real jazz people as singers Peggy Lee (her striking performance got her nominated for an Oscar) and Ella Fitzgerald, plus musicians Dick Cathcart, Matty Matlock, Moe Schneider and George Van Eps. And you can't miss Jayne Mansfield as a cigarette girl! It's hard-hitting and well on the beat.
