The veteran stage director scored a commercial hit with his feature debut - The Santa Clause.
The 1994 comedy, starring Tim Allen, is Disney picture's all-time highest grossing live action feature.
Its success also made Paquin - who cut his teeth on TV series including LA Law and Roseanne - the third most successful first-time film-maker of all time.
He began his career directing off-Broadway productions and landed an Obie Award for the play Moonchildren.
Pasquin followed The Santa Clause with Jungle 2 Jungle, reteaming with Allen, and the romantic comedy Joe Somebody in 2001.
After meeting Sandra Bullock, who executive produced his hit TV series George Lopez, Pasquin was picked to direct the sequel Miss Congeniality 2.
