Tolerant Christian Slater fans, of which there must be a few left, might get something out of this asinine action comedy, which has the hero addressing the camera in Alfie style. Slater's a ne'er-do-well layabout who's currently proposing to leave his pregnant girlfriend (Milla Jovovich) but finds his life changed when his older brother, a precinct cop, is gunned down. Due to a rather bizarre Los Angeles law, Slater finds himself in charge of his brother's beat and tangling with the crook who want to take over the neighbourhood. Though the action scenes are efficiently shot, the film's comic side hardly works at all, being strenuously over-directed by first time helmer Bruce A Evans. Slater's charisma helps a little bit but not much. And there's another of those flatulent dogs who became a tiresome staple of the early Nineties Hollywood comedy. STAR SPOT: Ashley Judd in a real bit part as the wife of a paintstore owner.
