This is a much more impressive turn in the director's chair from Barbra Streisand, compared to her first, Yentl. A finely crafted, beautifully shot voyage of self-discovery, Streisand's film hands the spotlight to Nick Nolte's excellent, Oscar-nominated performance in the difficult role of Southern boy Tom Wingo who, when summoned to New York by his sister's psychiatrist (Streisand) after the sister has attempted suicide, must learn to reveal his repressed emotions and face the horrors in his past. You may find the only problem with this film is Barbra's own performance: she continues to impress less in straight drama than in musicals or comedies, and perhaps should have limited herself to the director's chair here. Otherwise, it's a high-class weepie.
