This story of a drug dealer suddenly reaching a crisis in his life doesn't amount to very much considering the talents involved. Film maker Paul Schrader offers a typically cold and atmospheric view of the city backstreets at night, but his writing of the story makes it seem hardly worth the effort. Willem Dafoe has the John Garfield-style role as the dealer. With his partners already considering changing their line of work, he runs into an old girlfriend - and trouble. Dana Delany is a fresh new face in this role, but most of the other performances are no more than adequate, and Schrader almost tosses away what action there is. The moody soundtrack and its songs are right on, but they may not be enough to prevent you copying the title.
