Or: A Boxer in Auschwitz. Decently made, this is the true story of a Greek boxing champion who, being Jewish, was shipped off to a German concentration camp in World War Two. Here, while all his fellows gradually dropped away, he kept alive by undergoing 200 bouts and winning every one. Though somewhat sanitised, this is still horrific enough for most tastes, with heartfelt performances from Dafoe (the boxer), Loggia (his father) and Olmos, that Gary Merrill lookalike, as their 'gypsy' guard. The Jenny Agutter-like Wendy Gazelle is a poignant heroine who makes the most of her few scenes.
