A gentle love story set against the perilous background of the Gold Rush frontier about a Chinese girl sold into slavery to feed her starving family. The first feature film from documentarian Nancy Kelly, it has an epic sweep and stands proud as a landmark in the film history of the Chinese people on the American continent. The film's suffering heroine and handsome hero are well played by Rosalind Chao - now a semi-regular in Star Trek: The Next Generation - and Chris Cooper.
