This is a powerful and effective drama based on the events leading up to and including the notorious 1965 race riots in the poverty-stricken and predominantly black Watts district of Los Angeles. A strong cast is led by Blair Underwood as a young man with journalistic ambitions and includes acting heavyweights James Earl Jones and Cicely Tyson. From the political point of view, it appears a little one-sided, but the story is seen from one man's point of view (Underwood's). It is also well written by Michael Lazarou, while Kevin Hooks directs with pace and sensitivity.
