Petty thief Dustin Hoffman, about to go to prison for receiving stolen property, saves 54 people from a burning plane; but his homeless pal Andy Garcia takes the credit - and the $1million that goes with it. Previously unwilling to step into the limelight, Hoffman belatedly tries to grab the glory (despite having robbed the people he was rescuing). But, as is traditionally the case in this kind of social comedy, the fates conspire against him and, under the guidance of survivor and crusading reporter Gale Gayley (a super-sexy performance by Geena Davis) and her scoop-hungry editor (Chevy Chase, unbilled and unwigged), Garcia becomes a national celebrity. What's more, he's a nice guy (who starts doing good deeds) and Hoffman isn't - so hasn't justice been done? Well, you'll know the answers to that. The spirit of Frank Capra lives in this modern-day story quite rightly given an old-fashioned (save the language) treatment. After you've shed a tear or two, the film neatly sends you off with a laugh in the final scene. All the performances are good.
