Clint Eastwood's back in smart-suited action, though as Frank Horrigan rather than Harry Callahan, and sensibly playing on his advancing years to add a few frayed edges to his character.
Frank's a secret service man, a dinosaur from the Kennedy era, and now 'the only active agent who ever lost a president'.
When a psycho assassin (John Malkovich) homes in on the current president, Frank demands back into the protection racket.
Trouble is, jogging alongside the president's car, he now has problems keeping up.
However the assassin, realising that Frank was around at the Kennedy killing, begins a cat-and-mouse game with him, taunting him with the failures of his past life.
When one of Clint's buddies gets shot in pursuit of the villain, though, the old-timer grits his teeth and you know the bad guy's in trouble.
Despite a suspensefully edited ending, the film's a tad long, and efficient rather than exciting, especially in its treatment of a rooftop chase, which doesn't make the blood race the way it should.
