Nick Nolte delivers one of his finest performances in this unusual prison drama-cum-musical-cum-backstage-story about a life prisoner who finds redemption through becoming a literary cause celebre. It's just a shame that the film itself is such a hit-and-miss affair. Nolte's convict gains his unlikely freedom after he writes a play, titled Weeds, about prison life and his case is championed by a love-struck drama critic (Rita Taggart). Taking his show on the road to Broadway with a cast of ex-cons, Nolte offers several moments of great conviction, but overall the film rings pretty hollow, and is worth catching only for its classy central act.
