The conclusion of Richard Attenborough's anti-Apartheid epic finds journalist Kevin Kline on the run. It's in the escape section at the end that the director makes his only really false step, inserting flashbacks into a flight from authority that seriously undercut the emotional impact of the climax. Elsewhere, Attenborough is content to let the events speak for themselves and they do so with sickening effect.
