The actress attracted a degree of fame as the waif with a map of the world tattooed on her back on Kevin Costner's Waterworld.
She began her career in TV commercials before playing Sophie in the series Camp Wilder.
In 1994, she made her big screen debut opposite Meg Ryan and Andy Garcia in When a Man Loves a Woman as the daughter caught in the marital crossfire.
Next up was the Whoopi Goldberg comedy Corrina, Corrina, where she played the recently widowed Ray Liotta's only child.
Andre told the story of a harbour seal who journeyed from Boston to Maine for 23 years every summer to visit the only child who helped rescue him.
In 1995, Costner cast her in Waterworld and she followed this with a series of TV movies as well as the comedy Santa Fe.
Recent work includes the love interest of uber-geek Napoleon Dynamite in the independent movie of the same name.
