It falls to the excellent Gary Sinise to play Harry S Truman, the failed businessman and small-town politician from Missouri who rose to become the 33rd President of the United States on the death of the charismatic Franklin D Roosevelt in 1945. And, although he may not seem the obvious choice, Sinise makes a fair stab at the role in this made-for-cable movie. Some two hours isn't really sufficient to cover the career of a such a complex, hard-working individual who got into politics by very murky means and led the US out of World War Two and into the Cold War. Highpoints of the film include Truman's first words as President, the Truman family's arrival at the White House and Truman's 1948 election triumph. It is all well handled by the director, his cameraman and his editor. But, given another two hours, a more fully rounded portrait of the man and his times could have emerged.
