An underrated Western with many virtues, not least its stalwart performances, tense mood, taut direction and dark, edgy tone . Dean Martin is successfully cast very much against type as a bad apple ex-lawman, rotten to the core, who tries to wrest the local stagecoach company from its owners Jean Simmons and John McIntire. They turn to another ex-lawman, George Peppard, a gambling good guy, to help them stop Martin in his tracks. With people unable to accept Martin as a nasty and its casual violence, the movie wasn't universally popular its day, but its cynicism and toughness suit these modern times.
