In this semi-satisfactory thriller, Miami wine merchant Jack Nicholson steals a $1million diamond necklace from a wealthy client with the help of his Cuban mistress Jennifer Lopez and sickly English safecracker Michael Caine. But Nicholson's disaffected wife (Judy Davis) then walks out of their marriage, unwittingly taking the necklace with her. If director Bob (Five Easy Pieces) Rafelson could have managed a lighter and more consistent tone, all would be well, since the Nicholson-Caine double act is great - with the two stars giving genuinely witty and funny performances. But when heist movie turns to melodrama and death, all gets morbid and irritating instead of profound and brain-challenging. Nevertheless, there are lots of good things and fine moments in an often tense and amusing movie that rewards perseverance.
